The Race Is On!

The Race For Character Is Back For Another Year

 Story by Hannah Griffin

After a successful first annual Race for Character, the race is back for another year.

"Last year, every single month had a character trait, and we tried to create a big event for each month.  The Race for Character was the initial event for the month of May, which is self-discipline.  Since it was one of the more successful events, we decided to bring it back for another year," guidance counselor and Race for Character sponsor Mrs. Ashley Cryder said.

The Race for Character is a 5K, which is approximately 3.1 miles.  While most people only run when they're being chased, many people train to participate in the Race for Character.

"I think the race goes along with the self-discipline theme really well because it is about disciplining your mind, body and soul," Mrs. Cryder said.

Mrs. Cryder believes the Race for Character sends a positive message to the students.

"It's fun to get the students involved in something and see everybody outside the school environment promoting good character," Mrs. Cryder said.

"It's a good way to help out our school because any money the Race for Character raises goes to the Illinois Scholars Fund and that money can come back to us," sophomore and Race for Character committee member Brittany Mitan said.

This year, the race is being orchestrated by a new Race for Character Committee.

"The committee is new this year, and so far it has been really fun.  The kids are so excited about talking about the race on Channel Five news.  I'm really proud of the kids representing us.  They're really good kids," Mrs. Cryder said.

"I really liked being on the committee because I liked organizing, being in charge of something and helping out," Mitan said.

The Race for Character is not for students only.

"The race is for students, staff, and anybody in the community.  I really encourage everybody to come out for it, it will be a lot of fun," Mrs. Cryder said.

This year the Race for Character will be held May 10th at 9:30 am (registration at 8:45 am) on the Belleville West High School Campus.  Immediately following the race will be the Get Up & Go Fair, Rally and Celebration.  All events are open to the public. To find out more, click here.
